Letchworth - Part 2

Somewhat surprisingly we (the caddy pack & I) had been invited back to run this delightful little congress near Stevenage. Regular readers may recall that Junior Caddy was in disgrace from last year over some muddy roller blades, a bath full of goldfish and the attempted larceny of 100 pencils marked "Letchworth Hall Hotel".

There was a hand which I had to rule on at both tables in the Swiss Teams. At one table the auction had gone 1 D, 3 C overcall unalerted but actually Ghestem showing both majors. At the other table the auction had gone 1 D, 3 D overcall alerted and described as Spades and Clubs but actually Quantum showing both majors. The actual hand was both majors.

So at one Table I adjusted from 5 D+2 to 6 D+1, and at the other I adjusted from 5 D+1 to 6 D=. Not surprisingly this had little effect on the outcome of the match. I managed to persuade the players not to appeal, pointing out that I’d make sure the same committee heard both cases and whatever the merit of the appeal it seemed likely that their decisions would probably be similar in both cases. Whilst squabbling with the Caddy Pack in the chariot on the way home I wondered whether the appeal committee would have kept both deposits, given that the appeals might have merit but are probably frivolous in that they have no effect on the score.

Have a look at my dire warnings about 2-suited overcall abuse elsewhere. The EBU has little time for players who get Ghestem or Quantum wrong.
